In 2006 Naim and Mortaza, the founders of Visions for Children e.V., traveled to Afghanistan to visit their home country. They passed by the primary and secondary school Kalay Fatullah in Kabul. The school had a two-story building with a total of 13 classrooms and one library. A total of 850 boys and girls were taught there in two shifts. The existing classrooms were small and sparsely furnished. The large number of students (45 per class) and the cramped space in the rooms complicated the learning conditions as the classes could not be equipped with enough tables and chairs. Many students had to sit on the floor and take their notes on their laps. There was also a lack of school materials. Moreover, the sanitary facilities were in poor condition, unhygienic and not gender separated. This increased the absence rate especially of girls and their school performance suffered.

Affected by the poor learning conditions and at the same time impressed by the motivation to learn of the students and teachers, Naim and Mortaza decided to support the school. We improved the school in various ways: the school was extended by an additional floor, the classrooms were equipped with chairs, tables and teaching desks, all children were provided with exercise books and pens, and the school library was equipped with new books. To avoid the rain and the cold to enter the classrooms, windows were installed, and the roof of the school was repaired.  In addition, the sanitary facilities were gender separated and repaired. Finally, we provided dishes for the kitchen so that the children can now and then be provided with a warm meal.
